    Biography of Dr. Ted France

    Thaddeus France III, Ed.D

    Dr. Ted France has been a professor at Springfield College for 26 years and currently serves as Co-Chair in the Physical Education and Health Education department. He has taught classes in physical education pedagogy, motor learning, curriculum design, adventure/experiential education and qualitative research. Ted has mentored numerous graduate students through their research and dissertations. His particular areas of interest are experiential learning, positive youth development through sport and humanistic physical education. While at Springfield College, Ted has served as Director of the East Campus Outdoor Learning Center, Director of Outdoor Pursuits and Director of Camp Massasoit. In 2010, Ted was award the Springfield College Cheney Service Award for exemplary service to the Springfield College community. Ted also served as the Buxton Professor of Physical Education.

    Dr. France has numerous invited and refereed presentations on the regional and national levels. He has published articles and book chapters in the areas of physical education, sport, positive youth development through sport and community youth development. Recently, he and colleagues have published a book chapter, Coaching for Positive Youth Development: From Theory to Practice (2015).

    Ted and Dr. Al Petitpas created and ran Leaders in Academics, Community Engagement and Service (LACES) a community youth development program that helps students learn to lead in their communities through problem solving. LACES programs and research has been supported through numerous grants and funding totaling over $1.2 million.

    Ted has served as a developmental consultant to The First Tee a youth development program that uses golf to teach life skills and character education. In this role, he has been involved with the development of The National Schools Program, coach training, national participant opportunities and research. In 2013, Ted was honored to receive The First Tee Founder’s Award in recognition of service on to the organization.

    Dr. France earned his BS in physical education and MS in physical education with a concentration in adventure education from Springfield College and an Ed.D in teacher education and curriculum studies from The University of Massachusetts Amherst.
